‘Having fun’ and ‘on a budget ‘ are rarely two phrases that go well together in a sentence, but this is largely wrong. Whilst it helps, a good time isn’t always dependent on money. Today, many free things are available, dependent on whether or not you look in the right places, and quite often free entertainment, whether it be in the form of anything from a free fair to a local walking tour, is up to the same standard as a costly day out.
Firstly, you have to look in the right places. A good first step would be to use a search engine, and simply search for free days out in your area, switching your wording dependent on what you are looking for. Quite often, especially if you live in a large town or city, you will find entire websites devoted to free things around you, or you may be directed to anything from a government-run local website to a message board or forum where someone has asked a similar question. If that did not work, you could always contact your local tourism centre if there is one nearby and directly enquire, or check a local newspaper. Often places such as cafés or libraries will have notice boards listing what’s on around you.
But what exactly is likely to be on around you for free? Often this can range from anything from talks from established speakers (especially true if you live near a university or large institution, an incredible array of free talks can be found), to a poetry reading, to free music at a local venue. But as well as this, don’t forget that local parks, libraries, and even local art galleries can provide free fun. If you’re in a new area, spending a day walking the streets is a great activity and a great way to kill time. As well as this, by attending these free functions you are helping to keep up and support local businesses, artists, and people involved in these events. If you are willing to spend some money, make sure to check for offers online, and do some research around what you’re looking to do. You’re sure to save some money, even if it isn’t a substantial amount, and you’ll be surprised how far you can get with your money when you properly research offers that are on for what you have in mind.
Obviously when you aren’t paying a penny to watch or take part in an activity you can’t be picky. However, this definitely won’t hold you back from a great day out without breaking the bank. Keep an open mind, and remember to have fun. If you don’t have a great time, you haven’t lost much money at all, and it’ll definitely be a new experience.
